The Unrequited Dream a group exhibition shown at both Childers Art Space (apart of Bundaberg Regional Galleries) and Gympie Regional Gallery
The Unrequited Dream is a reflective exhibition concerned with the exploration of suburban life in Queensland, shaped by the contradictions of the so-called "Australian Dream." Three artists connected through familial ties creating art and exploring their experiences of Australia through a mix of installation, printmaking, and sculpture. The exhibition unpacks nostalgia (and pseudo-nostalgia) for a suburban past that is both cherished and critically questioned. It acknowledges the complex, often bittersweet memories of growing up in Australia while confronting the changing realities of cost of living, environmental damage, and identity.
Growing up in Queensland, the subtropical climate, vast skies, and sprawling suburbs carved unique visuals into the three artist's memories. This exhibition is a means of unpacking and understanding those experiences, both the comforting dialects of routine and familiarity, and the grief built from the loss of landscapes and monotonous traditions.
Fascinated by the undeniable visual juxtaposition between the Australian landscape and suburbia, the artists explore these concepts through the experimentation of varying printmaking techniques, unique sculptures made from discarded materials to create realistic miniature architecture, the exploration of clay through the lens of domesticity. Each artist explores their experience of growing up in Australia through their preferred mediums to reimagine Queensland suburbia and landscapes as a living archive. This exhibition is a personal and collective love letter-one laced with longing, irony, and critique, to the suburban experience and the natural landscapes lost or tamed in the name of comfort and domesticity.
