Unturned exhibited at The Condensery with in the Bomb Shelter gallery

Inspired by the phrase “no stone left unturned”, the exhibition harnesses the stone as a vehicle for investigating our curious relationship with the environment. The work offers an accessible and familiar motif and invites audiences to ponder the sheer diversity within aspects of everyday life previously overlooked.

Stanton incorporates naturally sourced materials, slow production and purposeful creation, respecting the nuances and uniqueness of each piece while reflecting the gentle passage of time within the natural world. These techniques are used also to replace certain ingredients within the artist’s ceramic glaze recipes. Oysters and egg shells replace calcium carbonate to become a flux, sand acts as raw silica and becomes the glass structure of a glaze, and various colourants are extracted from different rocks, wild clay and wood ash. Unturned reflects a societal shift towards sustainable practices and a return to primitive modes of production in place of synthetic or processed products.
